Borghild Skyberg

June 19, 1927 — December 9, 2016

Borghild “Borgie” Marie Skyberg, age 89, of Fort Peck, MT passed away Friday, December 9 th 2016 at her son’s home in Greenville, SC.

Borgie, the first daughter of Andrew and Mabel Hove, was born on June 19 th , 1927 in Glendive, MT.  She was raised on the family homestead East of Vida, MT and graduated from Wolf Point High School.  After graduation she attended the Holy Rosary Hospital School of Nursing where she received her Nursing degree.  She worked in Thief River Falls, MN, Wolf Point, MT and then at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital (FMDH) in Glasgow, MT.  While working at the hospital in Wolf Point she met and married Melvin T. Skyberg on October 7 th , 1956. In the early 1960’s they purchased a farm and ranch north of Fort Peck, MT on the Missouri river where they raised 4 boys, many head of cattle, bushels of grain and bales of hay.  She retired from FMDH in 2001 but continued to work as a Home Health Nurse until Parkinson’s caused her to leave her 53 year Nursing career.

Borgie enjoyed gardening, canning in the fall, sewing, quilting, and dabbled in raising registered Herefords; in her later years she enjoyed sitting at her dining room table watching the wildlife along the Missouri river.  She was a true Norwegian making lefse and lutefisk during the holidays.  She enjoyed family gatherings “talking story”; loved having family and friends near.  Borgie was very active in the Fort Peck Lutheran church and after her husband Melvin passed in 1991, Borgie completed ‘the Gifts Program’ becoming a Lay Pastoral Associate.  She also enjoyed traveling and wasn’t afraid to jump in the car to visit her son in Las Vegas or Tucson, where he was stationed in the U.S. Air Force, her sister, Olga, in Seattle or where ever she had the desire to go. When she finally had to stop driving, her last vehicle had over 300,000 miles on it, and never stopped letting the family know she still wanted to be behind the wheel.  When she moved to South Carolina to live with her son James she was proud to tell anyone who asked how wonderful Montana and living on a working ranch was.

Borgie is survived by her four sons; Steve Skyberg of Columbia Heights, MT, Richard (Sharon) Skyberg of Havre, MT, James (Carol) Skyberg of Greenville, SC and Paul (Bobbi) Skyberg of Fort Peck, MT; Sister in-law Kathleen Hove of Circle, MT;  Brother in-law Buster (Dorothy) Skyberg of Fort Peck; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Mabel Hove; husband, Melvin; brothers, Archie Hove, Stanley Hove, and Lawrence Hove; and sister, Olga (Hove) Monroe.
